2. Basic Terms and Concepts

As the target readership of this webpage are people with very little or no experience with computer mapping of geographic data, it is considered necessary to familiarize the readers with the basic terms and concepts related to mapping in general. However, the presentation of these concepts is kept simple, brief and precise in order to ensure a quick understanding of the concepts without entering much deeper into them. The chapter following this one addresses the Geographical Information System (GIS) and concepts more specific to the GIS are discussed there.
