2.2. Geocoding
Geocoding is the process of finding associated geographic coordinates (often expressed as latitude and longitude) from other geographic data, such as street addresses, or ZIP codes (postal codes). W. Goldberg (2008:3) defines geocoding as “the act of transforming a spatial locationally descriptive text into a valid spatial representation using a predefined process.” In linguistic geography, language data consists of language features with location information assigned to them.
Latitude
Latitude is defined as the angular distance, in degrees, minutes, and seconds of a point north or south of the Equator (cf. Perry-Castañeda Library).
Longitude
Longitude is defined as the angular distance, in degrees, minutes, and seconds, of a point east or west of the Greenwich meridian (cf. Perry-Castañeda Library).
