With the help of the statistical software SPSS, several calculations can be conducted. Since SPSS may be new to many students, you will find a detailed tutorial below, describing how averages and confidence intervals can be computed, using pooling, average of averages and finally bootstrapping.
The dataset provided contains information about individuals in the period from 1480 – 1579 and their use of the former object form ‘you’ in the subject function. This data is taken from Nevalainen and Raumolin-Brunberg (2003): Historical Sociolinguistics, p.101ff. It is labeled as the percentage with which a person uses ‘you’ instead of the original ‘ye’ as the subject form. The first five columns each represent 20-year-periods.
Columns 6 and 7 show the absolute number of occurrences (and not a percentage) of variable A resp. variable B from the sample data sheet in MS Excel, which has been described before.
