3.4.2        WordSmith

As mentioned in the glossary, CorpusSearch is a software that enables the researcher to make use of grammatical annotations within corpora. The website of CorpusSearch 2 thus gives information on the purposes that the Java program can be used for and the features it has. Apart from a list of compatible corpora, it also offers an extensive “Users Guide”, which answers questions about the query language, searching, shortcuts, advanced functions etc. Of course, the program can be downloaded from the website as well.

The website of WordSmith Tools, whose functions are explained in the glossary, is mainly helpful because of its detailed manual which is available under the tab “Support” and the keyword “help”. In it, the user can virtually learn everything he or she needs to know about both the functions and features of the suite and the handling of the respective programs such as “Concord”. In addition to that, the site offers a “frequently asked questions” section and provides help for difficulties concerning installation. Apart from purchasing the software, the visitor can download free demos of the current version and older versions of the suite.
