5.12. Sharing, Collaboration and Security

It is important that a created map can be shared with others, e.g. particular persons, peers, colleagues, teachers, and the people of the whole world, just as the map creator wishes. Moreover, in collaborative projects, it may be necessary that multiple persons are able to work on the same map. Therefore, it should be possible that all of them can update the map data. Sharing of a map automatically raises the question of security, which means that the sharing must be only in the desired manner to the target set of people.

Maps created with Fusion Tables can be shared quite easily with others. Such sharing can be confined to particular people or it can be open to anyone on the Internet, even without the need for having a Google account. It is also possible to share only part of the data, e.g. a number of selected columns of a data table, with particular people. This offers an easy integration of collaborative works. Sharing of Google Fusion Tables also facilitates the re-use of map data. One can, for instance, download the map data as a table and then modify and create one's own table and eventually one's own map.

LL-MAP also facilitates the sharing of created maps. Judging from the availability of hundreds of maps for public view, it appears as if such maps may be shared in public without the need of having an LL-MAP account. However, no such option has been found for the map created in this project. It requires logging in with an LL-MAP account to view the map, using the shared URL of the map.
