4.2.1. Supported Geographical Data and File Types

LL-MAP enables mapping language data corresponding to geographic locations, where a location can be a point, a line, or a closed boundary expressed as a polygon. It supports the following file formats:

• ESRI Shapefile, which consists of a collection of four different files: shape format (.shp), shape index format (.shx), attribute format (.dbf) and projection format (.prj). The .prj file is optional.
• Excel spreadsheet (.xls): allows locations to be mapped as points, not as regions or polygons
• Google Earth file: Keyhole Markup Language format (.kml or .kmz)

The creation of shape files requires the application of other software and tools, e.g., ArcGIS, which is beyond the scope of this webpage. Therefore, this example used location data specified as geographic points in an Excel spreadsheet.
