5.2 STRUCTURE

Parent Previous Next

The program structure is designed for genetic analysis and more precisely for using genetic data to infer population structure. Individuals are genotyped at multiple unlinked or weakly linked markers (multilocus genotype data) and based on this data the program infers the underlying genetic population. In turn the inferred population structure, which is defined by a set of allele frequencies at each locus on the chromosomes gives insight as to the origin of a particular proportion of the genome of an individual and thus allows us to assign individuals to populations and identify migrants and admixed individuals.

The program can be downloaded free of charge at http://pritch.bsd.uchicago.edu/structure.html (different versions available). For detailed information on how to run the program please check the user's manual for the version 2.2 which is published online and can be found at http://pritch.bsd.uchicago.edu/software/structure22/readme.pdf.
