part-of-speech (POS) tagging

part-of-speech (POS) tagging – also called word-class tagging, or grammatical tagging (cf. Anderson 2009: 102) - a type of annotation according to grammatical category or word class. Each word in a text is indicated with its respective part-of-speech or word-class tag (noun, adjective, adverb, etc.) (cf. Kennedy 1998: 21; Lindquist 2009: 43-45). This is usually done via an automatic tagger; however, since automatic POS tagging is not 100 per cent accurate, human post-editing may be necessary as a final stage (cf. Baker 2006: 128; Garside 1997: 197).
