The International Office offers housing in several student dormitories. Rent amounts up to € 350 (including additional charges) per month.

Three-week preparatory course (6 ECTS): includes 60 hrs of intensive German on different levels; orientation programme, excursions & other activities; cost: € 250; starts ca. early September, resp. early March.

General Overview

The University of Bamberg is a medium-sized university in Bavaria, the southern part of Germany, with about 13,000 students (incl. about 1,600 international students). First recorded in 1647, it is one of the oldest universities in Bavaria.

The University consists of three campuses. Most of the Humanities courses are held in the buildings in the old part of the city. Here students can discover the largest city centre under preservation in Germany, which was also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Through the centuries, various styles -- from Romanesque to Gothic and Baroque -- have characterised the architecture of the more than one-thousand year old city of Emperors and Bishops. The University thus plays an essential role in preserving the aesthetic beauty of Bamberg and promoting its cultural identity.

In addition to the old city centre, the University has a campus in the eastern part of Bamberg. Here, in newly renovated buildings, you will find the departments for Social Sciences, Economics and Business. The faculty of Applied Computer Sciences is located on the recently established “ERBA” campus. These two faculties comprise about a third of all students enrolled. The short distance between the three locations is quickly covered by bicycle or by public transport. Thus, students can easily get to know each other. Courses and research are interdisciplinary and international in focus.

The University of Bamberg has four faculties:

- Humanities and Cultural Studies
- Human Sciences and Education

The University of Bamberg prides itself on offering efficient administrative and support systems that enable students to concentrate on and complete their studies in good time. Research and studies in Bamberg have a strong European and international component. In particular, the "International Business", "European Economic Studies" and “International Information Systems Management” programmes, as well as most degree programmes within the Faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies, exhibit a strong international focus.

Although most of the courses taught in Bamberg are in German, the Faculty of Information Systems, Applied Computer Sciences, the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics and Business Administration offer several courses taught in English. Classes in the different Philologies (i.e. English and American Studies, Romance Studies, Oriental Studies, Slavic Studies, etc.) are mostly offered in the relevant language.

International focus

The University of Bamberg has exchange agreements with approx. 300 universities in ca. 60 countries. However, we are always looking to develop new, creative and successful relationships with other universities.

The International Office coordinates student exchange programmes and offers advice on all areas of studying abroad. Among the Bavarian universities, Bamberg has the highest percentage of students who study abroad (currently about 40% of our graduates have spent a period of more than three months abroad during their studies in Bamberg).

Tandem Programme (a University of Bamberg student will welcome the arriving international student and help him/her to get settled in the first couple of days.)

Accommodation in one of the student residence halls is organized upon request for all exchange students who will study at the University of Bamberg.

The International Office offers a three-week intensive German course and orientation programme for exchange students before the start of each semester. During the course, the students not only improve their German language skills but also learn about German culture and geography. They are also introduced to the organization of the University of Bamberg, general student services, the libraries, the course registration system, etc.

The International Office also offers a buddy programme, called 'tandem programme', which matches each international guest with one Bamberg student. The Bamberg students are available to assist the international participants with the first mandatory administrative steps in Bamberg, and to ease the transition period. The Bamberg tandem partners also provide their international partners with a personal introduction to student life in Bamberg.

All foreign students who are interested in a doctorate must find a professor willing to supervise them during doctoral studies. Applications must be accompanied by a written confirmation of acceptance in addition to the standard set of documents.

Specialised Language Instruction at the University of Bamberg

The University of Bamberg offers special “German as a Foreign Language” courses on various levels for our international exchange students throughout the semester. Additionally, there is a three-week preparation course prior to each semester which includes 60 hours of intensive German.
