1.3.6 Applicability to linguistics

Parent Previous Next

Taking all the listed factors into consideration, a carefully conducted Magnitude Estimation study proves to be complex and time-consuming. As simple as the method itself may be in principle, its application to linguistic phenomena is dependent on a range of various extra- and intralinguistic factors, which in combination complicate the scientific applicability of the method. In the hands of a competent team of linguists (combined with a solid statistical know-how), Magnitude Estimation can be a useful and valid tool for gaining introspection data. Bard et al. showed that measurements obtained by Magnitude Estimation “are reliable, i.e. intra- and inter- subject consistent” (Kline 1993 quoted in Hoffmann, Chapter 5).
