3.3.2. Web-based Techniques

In recent years the progress of with the Internet technology has benefited the mapping world as well. Web browsers provide support for viewing maps in an interactive and user-friendly way and map data can be provided as web services from web servers and databases. Most often the users do not even need to install any software on their own computer. This also facilitates working on the data as a group, where each member of the group can access and update the data he/she is entitled to. Once the data is updated on the server, every user of the data can automatically use the up-to-date information.

Using web services for mapping allows viewing maps not only on desktop PCs, but also on laptops, mobile phones, smart phones, and PDAs. The tools investigated further in this work, namely Google Fusion Tables and LL-MAP, use web-based techniques and they are accessible as web services.
