BAAYEN’s Analyzing linguistic data is a (compared to the other books) very outstanding, but also slightly more demanding introduction to R. Nevertheless, it does not require any formal mathematics or programming experience and discusses the basic concepts of statistical analysis while applying the right methods.

The examples in the book are based on real data sets that are available online. I consider this to be very helpful, since one can learn much more from real (and therefore more complicated to handle) data sets than from such that are made-up.

Supporting the clear structure of the book are the key terms standing out in small capitals, R input set in typewriter font, and examples and symbols in italics.

Since the learner has to apply the garnered knowledge, the workbook sections at the end of each chapter are very useful. They offer a set of problems with accompanying solutions in the appendix of the book. The appendix also contains an overview of R functions.
