3 Factors that influence the choice of-genitives

Previous Next

In chapter one of this paper, some factors which are assumed to influence the choice of genitives have been already mentioned, such as animacy, weight, givenness, possessive relation, final sibilant in the possessor, text frequency of the possessor head, type-token ratio and so on. These factors seem random but actually can be divided into several groups according to their features. This chapter will adopt the categories of Hinrichs and Szmrecsanyi (2007: 449), who divide those factors into 4 groups: semantic and pragmatic factors, phonological factors, factors related to processing and parsing, and economy-related factors. However, in the study by Hinrichs and Szmrecsanyi (2007) possessive relation was not mentioned, although it should belong to the group “semantic and pragmatic factors”.
