3.2.4 Evaluation of Praat

An important advantage of Praat is the extensive help function, which is updated constantly, a circumstance which is highly uncommon for most open-source-projects (Mayer). Praat also offers its own scripting language. These are small programs that compensate for missing functions or that automate extensive procedures.

But there are some small shortcomings that could be improved in future versions of the software. For example, there is no undo-function. In the event that a user presses Remove accidentally, the sound-object is permanently deleted; Praat does not offer a pop up window questioning your choice to remove the object.

Another deficiency is the division in the edit-window. The waveform takes up the upper part of the window, while all the analysis has to take place in the spectrogram. The division could be changed in favour of the spectrogram so that there is more space for the investigation of different features.
