3.2.1 Recording a sound

Parent Previous Next

Open the New-menu and choose either mono or stereo sound. In order to analyse phonetic features, a mono sound is sufficient. Click Record mono sound and the Recording-window will appear. Now click Record to start the recording and Stop to end it. The most important thing is to click Save to list afterwards. In consequence, this sound object appears on the list of the object-window. In order to actually save it on the computer, click on the Save-menu in the object window and then choose Save as WAV file. One weakness of the Praat software is that it is not possible to save a sound object in this software; if a sound object is not saved on the hard drive, it is lost.

In order to receive more information on a sound-object, click on this object and afterwards on the info-button at the bottom of the object window. A window opens that displays information on the chosen sound-object, such as duration or amplitude of the sound.
