type – an abstract class or concept, of which tokens are concrete, particular instances. For example, the sentence “To be or not to be, that is the question” consists of eight types and ten tokens similarly, with be and to representing two word types, which respectively occur twice, thus being counted as four tokens (cf. Nation and Meara 2002: 35).
