6.8 Dealing with other researchers

Fieldworkers should try to avoid going to sites where fellow linguists are conducting their research. If, however, this is inevitable, they should at least make sure that their presence does not impede an ongoing project, in advance. Generally, fieldworkers conducting their research in close proximity to one another, should not necessarily view such a situation as a threat to their work. Instead they should cherish it as a great opportunity to contrast findings and compare notes etc. Furthermore, researchers from other fields may also be of help. For instance, a biologist might be able to provide valuable data on plant or animal names, while an anthropologist might help with understanding a community's conventions etc. (cf. Crowley 2007: 52-53; Bowern 2008: 159).
