In degree programmes for the teaching professionat general education schools and at vocational schools with specialisation in social pedagogy, students must present credits in the field of educational science (EWS).

Teacher Training for General Education Schools

One of the most important objectives of EWS I is to acquire the basic competences for later teaching careers.

To this end, a total of at least 35 credit points must be acquired in the EWS I module as part of the teacher training programmes for primary schools as well as secondary schools of the Mittelschule, Realschule and Gymnasium type in accordance with § 22 LPO I of 13.03.2008. Following the reform of the module structure for the summer semester 2022, the credits are distributed as follows in the teacher training programmes at the University of Bamberg:

  • Foundations in Education: 8 credit points
  • School Education: 12 credit points
  • Psychology: 8 credit points
  • Interdisciplinary Educational Science: 7 credit points

To complete the teacher training programme at primary schools and secondary schools of the Mittelschule, Realschule and Gymnasium type, students are required to take a state examination in one of the disciplines of educational science.

Please note: the First State Examination in the educational science discipline can be taken at an earlier date. In this case, students must (1) have attained the required 35 credit points in the EWS I module, (2) completed a pedagogical-didactic school internship and (3) attained the required 8 credit points in the EWS II module (only applies to teacher training for primary and secondary schools of the Mittelschule type).

In accordance with §§ 22, 32 LPO I of 13.03.2008, a total of at least 8 credit points must be acquired in the EWS II module as part of the teacher training programmes for primary and secondary schools of the Mittelschule type. These points can be earned in the following subjects:

Field of theology / philosophy (a minimum of 3 of 8 credit points)

  • Protestant theology
  • Catholic theology
  • Philosophy

Field of social sciences

  • Cultural Education
  • Ethnology / European Ethnology
  • Political Science
  • Sociology

For subject combinations where Protestant or Catholic Religious Education is studied as a teaching or didactic subject, students must earn at least 5 of the 8 credit points in the field of Theology.

In the course of the degree programme for the teaching profession at secondary schools of the Realschule type, the required credit points must be earned in the EWS II module, if not already covered as part of the teaching subjects.

Teacher Training for Vocational Schools With Specialisation in Social Pedagogy

As part of the bachelor’s degree in Vocational Education / Social Pedagogy and Social Services, students must complete a degree course in educational science totalling 38 ECTS points in the following subjects:

  • Foundations in Education

  • School Education

  • Labour and Vocational Studies

  • Pedagogical-Didactic Internship

  • Psychology (EWS) I

As part of the master’s degree in Vocational Education / Social Pedagogy and Social Services, 22 ECTS credits must be earned in the following areas of educational science:

  • Psychology (EWS) II & III

  • School Education

  • Didactic Internship

Economics and Business Education & Education in Business and Information Systems

 

As per the above regulations, it is not mandatory to complete a subject in educational science when studying the degree programmes Economics and Business Education resp.
