Experiencing Democracy. An Event for Europe Day by and for Young People on 14 May 2024

  • When: Tuesday, 14 May 2024 at 6:15 p.m.
  • Where: lecture hall MG1/00.04 at the University of Bamberg (Markusstraße 8a, building 1 – with barrier-free access and an inductive hearing system)

The Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany is celebrating its 75th birthday on 23 May 2024. From 06 June to 09 June 2024, the direct elections to the European Parliament are taking place for the 10th time, and young people aged 16 and up will be able to cast their votes for the first time this year. The University of Bamberg is celebrating these milestones by hosting a special evening for the European Union’s Europe Day. The event will feature young people and highlight their hands-on experiences with democracy and parliamentary work.

The Bamberg section of the transnational organization Young European Federalists will present their experiences with the Simulation of the European Parliament (SIMEP), which they have been carrying out at schools in the Bamberg region. The current Bamberg delegation of the National Model United Nations (NMUN) will report on their work in Bamberg and New York. Both projects allow young people to engage with the operations, questions, and negotiation processes of parliamentary work in both the European Union and the United Nations. After all, democracy thrives on being experienced first-hand and actively shaped in civil society, in communities of shared values and their elected parliaments.

The delegations will present their projects and participate in a panel discussion, followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

The event is aimed at anyone interested in politics, democracy, and parliamentarism. A special invitation goes out to teachers and future teachers as the evening will showcase how to vividly convey German, European, and international politics.

Organized by the University’s Vice-President for Diversity and International Affairs and the association “Europa in Bamberg”, the event is open to the public. The presentations and panel discussion will take place in German. For the Q&A session, contributions by the audience in English are welcome.

Throughout the event, a university photographer will take pictures for public relations purposes.
