Maria Nowak ist Juristin mit einem breiten akademischen Profil. So hat sie im Rahmen ihres Studiums am Kolleg für fakultätsübergreifende Einzelstudien in den Geisteswissenschaften an der Universität Warschau auch Geschichte und Klassische Philologie studiert.

Ihre an der Universität Warschau verteidigte Dissertation befasste sich mit der Verbindung des römischen Testamentsrechts mit lokalen Praktiken und stützte sich sowohl auf Papyri als auch auf Quellen des gesetzlichen Rechts. Ihre Habilitation, das Ergebnis einer achtjährigen Forschung über uneheliche Kinder in der Zeit zwischen Augustus und Konstantin, setzt sich mit der Problematik der unterschiedlichen Wahrnehmung von "unehelichen Kindern" und der Definition von "Illegitimität" durch verschiedene Bevölkerungsgruppen und in unterschiedlichen Rechtstraditionen des Römischen Reiches gegenüber der des römischen Rechts auseinander. Dabei geht sie thematisch weit über die Illegitimität hinaus, indem sie die Probleme des Status oder der Familie im Römischen Reich behandelt. Sie stützt sich auf eine Vielzahl von Texten unterschiedlicher Natur, darunter Rechtsprechung, kaiserliches Recht, Papyri verschiedener Art, Inschriften und Literatur.

Seit 2020 forscht sie zu juristischen Netzwerken in der spätantiken Rechtspraxis Ägyptens. Ihr besonderes Interesse gilt dabei koptischen Dokumenten aus der thebanischen Region sowie griechischen und koptischen Papyri aus Aphrodite des sechsten und siebten Jahrhunderts.

Seit Oktober 2023 ist sie Teil des AntCoCo-Teams in Bamberg.

  • 10.06.2008: Magister juris: Fakultät für Recht und Verwaltung und Kolleg für fakultätsübergreifende individuelle Studien in den Geisteswissenschaften, Universität Warschau (betreut von Dr. Jakub Urbanik).
