Gastvortrag von Dr. Iva Čukić (Collective Ministry of Space, Belgrade): "The Democratization of Urban Planning"

The lack of democratic development in Serbia is very visible in the approach to shaping and
developing city spaces. Urban policies are formulated and implemented in discrepancy with
the needs and visions of citizens, but rather in accordance with the interests of the political
and economic elite. In this context, citizens organize and form their initiatives mostly in
reactive situations, but in recent years there has been a significant increase of those initiatives,
as well as proactive actions, both in Belgrade and in other cities throughout Serbia.
This presentation will give an overview of the participation processes in Belgrade, with an
emphasis on the endeavours and experiences of the collective Ministry of Space which
intensively works towards raising awareness on the citizens’ participation in urban planning
and in close collaboration with the local initiatives.
