2.2 Informants

Three different groups of informants participated in our study:

• A group of 19 ALE speakers attending the Hauptseminar: Research Methods in Language Variation and Change at the University of Bamberg, who were asked to judge 20 sentences, after we had given our presentation on Magnitude Estimation.
• A group of 25 male pupils attending the 9th grade at Watford Grammar School in England where a student of our seminar spent one year as a foreign language assistant.
• A smaller group of three native speakers of AE, which we were fortunate enough to obtain data from.

Unfortunately, the groups are not balanced as far as the numbers of participants are concerned; however, one has to consider that this study is not a large-scale empirical study for a final thesis, but merely an attempt to put the theory of Magnitude Estimation into practice so that the reader is able to get a clearer picture of what can be achieved with this method.
