1.1.6 What kind of results can be obtained by Magnitude Estimation?

Parent Previous Next

Introspection data is often criticised for being unscientific. Magnitude Estimation, however, can meet the standard criteria for scientific data, if it is carried out correctly, i.e. if the experimental settings are constructed carefully. If done so, Magnitude Estimation allows “reliable and fine-grained measurements of linguistic intuitions” (Keller and Alexopoulou 2005: 1120). In accordance with psycholinguistic experimental standards, Magnitude Estimation yields fine-grained acceptability judgements of linguistic items.
