Welcome to the webpage accompanying Chapter 4 "Designing and Conducting Interviews and Questionnaires" by Manfred Krug and Katrin Sell.
Introduction
Questionnaires and interviews are crucial means of linguistic field work which can be used to elicit a large amount of data. Thus, they help to get an insight into the actual language usage and various linguistic features. However, when researchers aim for reliable data and significant results, a scientifically appropriate approach needs to be taken. Krug & Sell’s chapter “Designing and conducting interviews and questionnaires”, published in Research Methods in Language Variation and Change (ed. Krug & Schlüter 2013) functions therefore as a comprehensive guideline. In order to summarise this research method, the key ideas referring to the theoretical background and the practical application are presented in the first section of this webpage.
Secondly, the online application LimeSurvey, which can be used to create a web survey, is described. Therefore, detailed instructions are given to lead through the process of designing an online survey using this application. This programme can be used for any kind of questionnaire, but the final part of this webpage shows how to create a lingustic survey with LimeSurvey.
The last section serves therefore as a documentation of the process of designing and creating the pilot study called “A sociolingustic study of the specific use of grand and deadly in Hiberno-English”.
