3.3.1. Informant sheet

In total, 73 informants have taken part in this survey so far. The absolute number of participants’ answers in each section differs from the total figure because some informants did not finish the entire survey. Out of 55 answers, the average age of the informants is 30.71 years, with a minimum of 18 years and a maximum of 55 years.

Gender

Apparently more women have taken part in this survey than men. This has happened due to the lacking control of choice of speakers. So, one has to keep in mind that the following results might be influenced by a gender specific language usage.

Nationality

This diagram shows that the majority of participants are Irish. The remaining participants who are not Irish have lived in Ireland for more than a year. Thus, the survey samples the intended people who are relevant for a study on the English spoken in Ireland.

Distribution in Ireland

The distribution of participants within Ireland is depicted in the above diagram. This dispersion will be important for the in depth analysis of the regional background as a social factor influencing the usage of grand and deadly.

The educational qualification and the occupation of each participant will be analysed individually in line with the regional background and the respective answers. Generally, the educational qualification distributes as follows: 45% Bachelor, 25% Leaving Certificate, 15% Master, 8% Apprenticeship and 7% other.
