Welcome to the webpage accompanying Chapter 3 "Computer Mapping of Language Data" by William A. Kretzschmar, Jr.
This webpage investigates how easily accessible mapping tools can be used even by linguists with very little to no programming skills. The present webpage is aimed to help understanding basic concepts used in mapping, gathering information about a variety of mapping software and tools, and exemplifying a few of them to map a relatively simple set of data. This experience is then used to measure those tools against a number of expected features for such mapping tools. In the process, the reader is expected to gather a sound, although not very deep, understanding of mapping linguistic data using computer support, the desired set of characteristics of such support, and an initial idea of how such mapping is done. The webpage is also expected to provide an impression of overall pros and cons of computer mapping of linguistic data.
