- In American English the factor group voicehas a major impact on the speaker's choice process. When used within an active construction the verb to prefer commonly followed by the preposition to; however, when applied within a passive context to preferis more often accompanied by the variant over. In effect, the anticipated results in regards to the variant over far more common within passive constructions, as predicted by the literature, must be narrowed down slightly.
