Winter Showcase (February 2025)
In this Wintersemester of 2024/2025 the BUEDG not only performed a total of five short plays, but also had several workshops including improv, costume and makeup. In addition to that, the group focussed heavily on stage design.
The evening started with a spin on Shakespeare’s Hamlet with Ruby of Elsinore by Bruce Kane. This reimagination took place in Ruby’s hair salon, with the characters being her clients and talking about their personal struggles.
After that followed the experimental satire The Illuminati in Drama Libre. In this one-act play the two characters experience a full range of human emotions. The vivid colours carried over from the background to the costumes.
The third play A Marriage has been arranged by Alfred Sutro deals with a complicated marriage proposal of a millionaire to a reluctant woman. After an interesting offer, they both agree on the wedding plans and live happily ever after.
Before the intermission, four actors performed Louise Bryant’s morality play the Game. Personifications of Life and Death role the dice deciding the fate of two young humans, a poet and a dancer. The ending suggests that Life might have won this game.
The evening concluded with our adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It tells the story of a young girl getting lost in world full of wonders, talking animals and mad people. Chasing a white rabbit, Alice gets to talk to living chess queens, argue with an egg-shaped creature, participate in a crazy tea party and play croquet with the royals of this realm, the story ends with a strange trial where Alice gets to save a life.
