Prof. Dr. Christian Ledig gave the “Servus KI! Podcast" of the University of Bamberg an interview on the topic "Artificial Intelligence in medicine".
AIs are already having a meaningful impact in the areas of "diagnostics" and in the "development of drugs," according to Ledig. Imaging AI processes in X-ray, magnetic resonance and computed tomography images are particularly in focus here: In fact, these detection mechanisms are quite robust, efficient and amazingly accurate. With the help of AIs, for example, radiologists can already be supported, says Ledig.
Unfortunately, in practice, clinics and treatment facilities still have partly heterogeneous workflows in order to use available databases more efficiently. Technically, the systems are often mature, but not always applicable in practice. According to Ledig, the "electronic patient file", which is supposed to list patient data in a centrally standardized way, is a good example how some of these difficulties can be addressed. There are also restrictions on the subject of data protection of the systems.
Ultimately, Ledig underlines the criticality of medical AIs: Patients entrust their own health, their life, to the doctors treating them. The AI must therefore always be explainable and comprehensible for the treating staff in order to offer people a valid basis for decision-making.
