Important facilities

WIAI student council and WIAI.community

In many cases, students can best empathize with the situation and problems of other students. That's why you have your student council (which also organizes these first semester introductory days for you), which on the one hand helps you with problems and uncertainties, but on the other hand also plans numerous events such as summer and Christmas parties, regulars' tables, games evenings, LaTeX tutorials and more. In addition, the student council represents the voice of the students in numerous committees at the university and throughout Germany in order to stand up for the best possible study situation.

In contrast to the student council, the WIAI.community consists primarily of alumni of our faculty. In addition to supporting the networking of members, several WIAI practice reports are organized every year, at which lecturers from different companies give practical presentations and offer opportunities for contact and exchange.

Studying

Is your own apartment not a suitable environment for quiet, concentrated study or does the presence of other students increase the pressure to actually work on the upcoming assignment? The classic solution: the university library. In Bamberg there are 6 of them! In addition to borrowing books, you can simply look for one of the (usually) free workstations in your favorite library and take care of your seminar papers, lectures and more. For our night owls, the ERBA library (where all the computer science courses are based) is even open 24/7. If you only want to browse through virtual pages for suitable literature, the Bamberg catalog is the right place for you.

In addition to the libraries as study rooms, there are also several other study rooms at the ERBA, which are equipped with screens, armchairs, flipcharts or beanbags, depending on the room. If all the study rooms are occupied, our room search tool will help you find a free seminar room.

Abroad & Career

The Career Center is responsible for the annual Careers Day, at which numerous companies from SAP consulting to the police to software companies present themselves (and bring lots of goodies!). In addition, internships abroad are arranged through the Corporate Internship Program. Further offers include the WIAI job exchange, where you will receive curated job offers.

USA, Japan or Sweden - these and many other countries are possible with the University of Bamberg's exchange programs. At the same time, we ourselves are a popular destination for many Erasmus students and students on the Master's program in International Software Systems Science. The Faculty of WIAI in particular offers a wide range of credit transfer options, allowing you to seamlessly integrate a semester in another country into your studies. More information on possible target universities, deadlines and experience reports can be found at the International Office. Students also report on their stays abroad in the WIAI Abroad section of the WIAI student council.

Food

Catering at the University of Bamberg depends entirely on the respective location. While Feki and the city center have their own fully-fledged canteens, ERBA has a cafeteria run by the Studierendenwerk Würzburg. The cafeteria serves a hot meal (menu) from Monday to Thursday, alternating between meat/fish, vegetarian or vegan. There is also a selection of sandwiches, pizza and vegan bowls.

There is also a bakery, a butcher, Edeka, Lidl and Umi Sake Haus (sushi and bowls) within walking distance. If you have a little more time for lunch, you can also take the bus or bike to the canteen in the city center.

Continued education

In addition to programming languages, you can also learn a variety of “real” languages at the University of Bamberg through the Language Center, such as English and French, of course, but also Swedish or Japanese, and in many cases even incorporate them into your studies. In addition, the VHB offers a wide range of online modules from all over Bavaria on all kinds of topics (some of which can also be incorporated into your studies!). Your skills are rounded off with modules on starting a business, community service and communication training from the Center for Key Competencies. In other words, everything that is relevant for you (and your employer) in addition to the regular curriculum!

Consulting

There are numerous facilities at the University of Bamberg whose aim is to support your studies in every situation. Don't be afraid to contact the listed offices, no matter how small the question seems - they will be happy to help you with advice and support, even before you start your studies!

  • The Central Student Advisory Service provides support on topics and questions relating to studying. They will work with you to provide information and clarify your motivation to help you make your decision and develop possible solutions for your concerns.
  • The Technical Student Advisory Service is a suitable point of contact for detailed and further information on course content and structure. Among other things, it provides assistance with questions regarding the focus of academic work, learning and working techniques in your subject and the relevant examination and study regulations of the University of Bamberg. The Student Advisory Service should be contacted in particular by students transferring to another university to check whether credits already earned (at another university or in another degree program) can be transferred.
  • The Equal Opportunities Officer (Faculty WIAI and University of Bamberg) is responsible for general advice on women's issues, the advancement of women, public relations and reporting, events for young researchers and the prevention of disadvantages for female academics, artists, female teaching staff and students.
  • The Anti-Discrimination Office provides advice and support services for all members of the university in cases of discrimination, exclusion and harassment based on protected characteristics.
  • The Family Office is the central point of contact for students and employees with family responsibilities.
  • The Contact Point for Studies and Disability is the first point of contact for people who are impaired in their studies due to a disability (even without a disabled person's pass), chronic illness, e.g. diabetes, mental illness, AD(H)S, epilepsy or acute illness/disability, e.g. due to an accident.
  • Psychotherapeutic counseling helps students who feel burdened by study-specific problems such as exam anxiety or chronic procrastination, but also with other complaints from other areas of life such as contact problems, depressive-anxiety symptoms or difficult eating behavior.
  • Social counseling offers support in finding a solution to social, economic or very personal issues.
  • Legal advice provides support with legal questions and problems in various areas of law.
