Prof. Dr. Stefan Hörmann

The Vice-President for Teaching and Learning chairs:

  • the Standing Committee on Teaching and Students;
  • the Committee on Quality in Studying and Teaching;
  • the university‘s Study Grant Commission.

He is responsible for:

  • questions of quality management in teaching and learning;
  • questions of continuing education programs;
  • questions of advanced training in higher education didactics;
  • Affairs of the officer for students with disabilities.

Prof. Dr. Stefan Hörmann is Vice President for Teaching and Learning at the University of Bamberg since October 1, 2020. His motto for his office is: "To offer and enable attractive studies for students today and tomorrow".

After standing in as professor of Music Pedagogy and Music Didactics at the University of Bamberg from 2001-2005, Stefan Hörmann has held the Chair as appointed Professor since 2005. During this time, he has been intensively involved in the university's academic self-administration in various functions: among others, he was Dean of Studies from 2006 to 2011, Vice Dean from 2011 to 2013, and Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences and Education from 2013 to 2017. From 2017 to 2020, he was member of the Senate and the University Council as well as Head of the Standing Committee for the Certification of Study Programmes.

In his teaching and research activities concerning music didactics in schools (primary and secondary) and in various out-of-school activities, Stefan Hörmann focuses primarily on historical and systematic scientific music pedagogy as well as on fudamental music theory and music analysis. Within the German-Austrian research association 'Scientific Music Pedagogy' – a research network between the universities and music academies of Bamberg, Bremen, Graz, Mannheim and Siegen – he contributes terminological and systematic research towards enhancing the academic profile of music pedagogy.

Stefan Hörmann studied musicology, music pedagogy and liturgics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München from 1983-1989 and received his doctorate in music pedagogy in 1994 with a dissertation on the subject of music in early 20th century school instruction. He received fellowships from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and the Cusanuswerk. Furthermore, he received a Scholarship for Highly Gifted Students from the State of Bavaria (BayBFG). From 1989 to 2004, he was a research assistant and lecturer at the Institute of Music Education at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.
