Dr. Pauline Cuzel

Pauline Cuzel studied ancient history and epigraphy at the Ecole Normale Supérieure and at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris. In her PhD thesis, she focused on the civil staff of Roman provincial governors during the Principate and combined epigraphical and archaeological evidence with literary and juridical sources in order to reconstruct the personal and professional networks that linked these individuals and the tasks that they were in charge of.

During her PhD, she worked as an archivist at the Musée d’Archéologie nationale (national archaeological museum) in Saint-Germain-en-Laye and taught Latin and commentary of ancient sources at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris. Since her PhD defence, she has held a postdoctoral three-years position at the Ecole française de Rome (French archaeological institute in Rome).

Research fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation since November 2023, she aims to understand the ways in which Roman empire was ruled by shedding light on the minor officials, soldiers, imperial slaves and freedmen who played crucial roles in day-to-day administration. More specifically, her current research project intends to propose a new publication and a new study of the 953 inscriptions from the Necropolis of the Officiales in Carthage (Tunisia).

•   2020-2023: Postdoctoral research fellow at the Ecole française de Rome, Italy.
•   2021 – present: Co-Principal Investigator of the project "Corpus des inscriptions latines païennes de Carthage", with S. Aounallah, INP (Tunisia). Research programme involving the École française de Rome, the Tunisian Institut national du Patrimoine and the UMR 8546 - AOROC laboratory (CNRS-PSL).
