Prof., Dr. rer. pol. Dr. h. c. Hans-Peter Blossfeld is Emeritus of Excellence of the Graduate Centre Trimberg Research Academy (TRAc) at the University Bamberg, Germany, since April 2020. He held the Chair of Sociology I at the Faculty for Social Sciences, Economics, and Business Administration at the University Bamberg from 2002 until 2020. In 2012-2017, he was on leave to take over the Chair of Sociology at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.
Born in Munich (Germany) in 1954, Blossfeld studied Sociology, Economics, Social Statistics, and Computer Science at the University of Regensburg, Germany (1976-1980). He received his Doctorate in Economics from the University of Mannheim (Dr. rer. pol., 1984), Germany, and his Habilitation (and Venia Legendi, 1987) in Sociology from the Free University of Berlin, Germany. Hans-Peter Blossfeld started to work as a research scientist at the University of Mannheim, Germany (1980-1984) and then as a senior research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Education in Berlin, Germany (1984-1992). In the academic year 1988/89, he was a Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for the Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) in Wassenaar, the Netherlands. 1989-1992, he held the Chair in Sociology at the Department of Political and Social Sciences, European University Institute (EUI), Florence, Italy. Afterwards, he moved back to Germany to the Chair in Social Statistics and Sociological Research Methods at the University of Bremen (1992-1998) and then moved to the Chair in Theory and Empirical Analysis of Social Structures and Economic Systems at Bielefeld University (1998-2002).
Blossfeld has published 37 books and over 250 articles on life-course research, social inequality, youth, family, educational sociology, labor market research, demography, social stratification and mobility, modern methods of quantitative social research, and statistical methods for longitudinal data analysis. These have been cited more than 33.800 times (H-Index = 75; I10-Index = 273; Google Scholar, June 2021).
Blossfeld has taught and held visiting positions at Harvard and Cornell University, the Nuffield College in Oxford, and the University of Southampton, the Universities of Haifa and Tel Aviv, the Karl-Franzens University in Graz and the University of Vienna, the Universidad Complutense in Madrid and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in Bergen, the Université de Genève, the Universities of Utrecht, Nijmegen, and Groningen, the Universities of Trento and Torino, the Université de Montréal, and the State University in St. Petersburg.
During his career, Blossfeld has directed several large-scale research projects in the social sciences, among them the European Research Council (ERC) funded project “Education as a Lifelong Process. Comparing Educational Trajectories in Modern Societies" (eduLIFE) (2012-2016) (funding: 2.5 Mio. Euro); the “National Educational Panel Study” (NEPS), supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Germany (2006-2012) (funding: annually about 23 Mio. Euro); the cross-national comparative Globalife project, supported by the Volkswagen Foundation (1999-2006) (funding: 1.5 Mio. Euro); Co-Director (together with Hans-Günther Rossbach, Gabriele Faust and Sabine Weinert) at the DFG Interdisciplinary Research Center on “Educational Processes, Competence Development, and Formation of Educational Decisions in the Early Educational Career” („Bildungsprozesse, Kompetenzentwicklung und Formation von Selektionsentscheidungen im Vor- und Grundschulalter“, BiKS) (2005-2014) (funding: about 8.3 Mio. Euro); and the TransEurope project supported by the European Science Foundation (ESF) (2006-2011) (funding: 1. Mio. DM). Blossfeld has also received research funding for many projects by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the United States, the European Commission in Brussels (DG5 and DG12), the German-Israeli Foundation, the Anglo-German Foundation, via the Descartes Prize of the European Commission, and the European Science Foundation.
Together with Prof. Sabine Weinert, Blossfeld is currently coordinating the DFG Priority Research Programme (SPP) 1646 (2012-2021) (funding about 1.1 Mio Euro). Since 2012 he was also the director of the SPP project ‘Determinants of the emergence of gender-specific patterns of competencies and decision making over the educational career in Germany’, (funding about 0.5 Mio Euro). Finally, together with Professor Rolf Becker (University of Bern, Switzerland) he is conducting long-term empirical analyses on the impact of the modernization process on entry into the labor market and job career processes of men and women born 1945-2008.
1990-2012, Blossfeld was Editor-in-Chief of the European Sociological Review (ESR), 1998-2020 Blossfeld was Co-Editor of the Zeitschrift für Erziehungswissenschaft (ZfE) (Journal for Educational Research), and 2003-2012, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Zeitschrift für Familienforschung (ZfF) (Journal of Family Research). 2005-2013, he served as Co-Editor of International Sociology (IS). Over a period of more than 15 years, he served on the scientific advisory board of the Kölner Zeitschrift für Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie (KZfSS) and the Zeitschrift für Soziologie (ZfS). Blossfeld is on the editorial board of the journal Studies of Transition States and Societies (STSS), the journal Društvena istraživanja (Journal for General Social Studies), the Journal of Sociology and Social Anthropology (JSSA), and the Portuguese journal Revista Sociologia.
Blossfeld is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina) in Germany, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW) in Berlin, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (BAW) in Munich, and the European Academy of Sociology, currently hosted in Utrecht. In 2004-2009, he was the Chairman of the European Consortium of Sociological Research (ECSR), and in 2014-2016, he was the President of the Society for Longitudinal and Lifecourse Studies (SLLS), London.
In 2010, Blossfeld was awarded the Doctorate Honoris Causa from the University of Tallinn, Estonia, and in 2012, he received the “Honorary Badge with Ribbon" from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia. In 2012, he was appointed IAB Research Fellow of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg, Germany, and ROA Fellow by the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA) at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. In 2019, Blossfeld was appointed “LIfBi Research Affiliate” by the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi), Bamberg.
2002-2020, Blossfeld was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Youth Institute (Deutschen Jugendinstituts (DJI)) in München, since 2012 he has been a member of the Advisory Boards for the Research Programme „Educational Systems and Four Functions of Education“ at the Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies (AMCIS) at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. 2005-2019 Blossfeld was Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the „University Graduate Panel” (Universitätsabsolventen-Panel) of the Bayerische Staatsinstitut für Hochschulforschung und Hochschulplanung (IHF) in München.
