Short documentary “Der Meisenkaiser” nominated for the 35th Bamberg Short Film Festival!

The short documentary “Der Meisenkaiser”, which was made in cooperation with the film author, producer and cameraman Christopher Dillig and Prof. Dr. Larsen, has been nominated for the 35th Bamberg Short Film Festival. It can be seen at the Lichtspielkino Bamberg on 21.01.2025 from 19:30 and on 22.01.2025 from 5:30 p.m. (film block “DOKU II: ÜBERLEBENSHANDBUCH”).

Dr. Karl-Heinz Schmidt was already interested in nature as a primary school pupil, especially birds. He was particularly taken with tits. He has been observing and researching them ever since. The film portrays a passionate scientist who has dedicated himself to long-term observation - out of conviction. He has made a name for himself internationally as the “tit emperor”. For more than 45 years, the 82-year-old has headed the ecological research station in Schlüchtern.

With his impressive long-term monitoring of the ecology of cavity-nesting songbirds, dormice, bats and insects, he has shown how science and education can go hand in hand to promote awareness of ecological relationships. After 23 years of teaching at Goethe University, he founded the Ecological Research Station in Schlüchtern to continue his work on a voluntary basis with pupils, students and many other volunteers. In almost 60 years of meticulous and carefully documented scientific work, a treasure trove of over 30 million data sets has been created to date. A wealth of data that is unparalleled worldwide.

The idea for the film came about as part of the seminar “School of the future: thinking, feeling, acting, changing.” The students conducted interviews with personalities who have had a particular impact on their lives.

There are few people who have inspired me during my studies as much as Karl-Heinz. As a biology student, I spent 6 weeks of my ecology internship with him in the forest, checking nesting boxes during the breeding season.

What he taught me: mindfulness towards nature - with all your senses and with your mind - in a world that is often characterized by short-term thinking and action.

The film is a thank you for the wealth of data he has collected over decades, but above all for the fact that his work has sensitized and inspired so many people like me to the nature on our doorstep!
