Preserving German-Czech Cultural and Natural Heritage

Beginning on 1 January 2017, the new “Archaeo-Centre Bavaria-Bohemia” (Archäo-Zentrum Bayern-Böhmen) launched operations in the History Park Bärnau-Tachov. The University of Bamberg’s Prof. Ingolf Ericsson and his department of Medieval and Post Medieval Archaeology are involved in this unique project dedicated to “preserving and presenting common cultural space”. The centre is located in the German-Czech border region and will serve as an educational coordination hub that aims to increase the regional awareness of this area’s rich cultural and natural heritage and make it accessible to the broader public. The duration of the project is set at three years.

Funding for the project comes from the EU’s INTERREG V-A programme, which supports cooperation between the Free State of Bavaria and the Czech Republic. Speaking in Munich on 15 December, the Bavarian Minister of Education and Cultural Affaris Dr. Ludwig Spaenle described the project, saying, “Four projects initiated by Bavarian universities, municipalities and associations in the regions of Lower Bavaria, Upper Franconia and the Upper Palatinate are being supported with approximately 3.2 million euros in EU funding for regional development. In addition to the Upper Franconian University of Bamberg, the proposal submitted by the Deggendorf Institute of Technology was particularly persuasive. The city of Regensburg and the Via Carolina Society have also participated successfully in the EU programme for the advancement of Bavarian-Czech projects promoting culture, education and institutional cooperation”.
