PhD Student – Scientific Employee (m/f/d)
in Robotics and Human-Robot Interaction

(Full-time, salary according to E13 TV-L)

initially limited to 3 years with the option of extension and the goal of a doctoral degree.

The University of Bamberg has a strong focus on artificial intelligence with eight core AI professorships, including initiatives such as the Bamberg Center for Artificial Intelligence (BaCAI). Numerous other AI-related professorships are connected via the Hightech Agenda Bayern, with a total of 30 professorships in the field of computer science.

The Multimodal Intelligent Interaction group performs research in the field of intelligent cyber-physical systems and human-robot interaction. The focus is on autonomous solving of complex tasks by robots and natural interaction between humans and robots in the context of joint action scenarios. Application areas include the intuitive instruction of robot systems for small batch sizes, service robots, smart factories and socio-technical assistance systems.

Emphasis is on cognitive systems with a combination of symbolic and sub-symbolic approaches in hybrid AI approaches, machine learning methods, knowledge representation, integrated task and motion planning, multimodal interaction and advanced systems engineering.

Your Role:

  • Research at the intersection of robotics and artificial intelligence with a focus on intuitive instruction of robot systems and natural human-robot interaction
  • Independent scientific work on a research topic
  • Participation in research and teaching at the chair
  • Presentation of research results at international conferences and publication in internationally recognized journals
  • Realization of robot demonstrators in research and teaching
  • Participation in teaching courses and supervision of seminar papers and theses

Your Profile:

  • Excellent university degree (Master or equivalent) in computer science or a closely related field
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in robotics, machine learning, Semantic Web, software engineering or related areas
  • Very good programming skills and experience in programming distributed robot systems, e.g., C++, Robot Operating System (ROS), OPC UA
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary research
  • Strong ability to work analytically, conceptually and independently as well as good communication and teamwork skills
  • The ability to teach in German and in English is required
