Perverting aerial archaeology
Perverting aerial archaeology
Mikołaj Kostyrko
In this paper I will focus on the role of (aerial) archaeology in the contemporary world - what’s its meaning, how is it practiced and how it could (should) change in the next years under the influence of theory developed within archaeologies of the contemporary past. Although recently aerial archaeology has been flirting with technocrats, it is still in the privileged position where researcher’s self-awareness is regarded as key factor to understanding ‘the past’ and its power relations. Following the archaeologists of the contemporary past, I propose to focus on the present landscapes, biography of things (places) and to abandon the mirage of producing grand narratives in favor of more inclusive approach – creation of memory. At last, I would like to address some of the challenges that are connected to aerial archaeology and its ‘engagement’ with the present.
