It is important that you register for your courses within these registration periods.

The Digital Info Portal for Geography is a course in the virtual campus (VC) and acts as a central platform for announcing general information from the Institute for Geography. Via this portal, you can look at job advertisements with a human geographical focus and find information on talks and events held by the Institute for Geography, as well as general information that concerns all Geography students at Bamberg.

If you need a letter of recommendation from Prof. Dr. Andreas Dix (e.g. for a grant application, a stay abroad, etc.), please allow at least six weeks for this to be issued. Please send a formal request to studienberatung.ma-histgeo(at)uni-bamberg.de containing all the relevant information on why the letter is required, your personal details (CV, transcripts if possible) and stating when you need the letter by. It may be the case that last-minute requests cannot be fulfilled.

The Professorship for Historical Geography usually offers an extended field trip in the summer semester that is attended as part of Module 3: Regional Historical Geography. An accompanying seminar to this field trip is also offered. The field trip lasts 8 days and can take place in Germany or abroad. Prof. Dr. Andreas Dix also offers three one-day city field trips each summer semester (to the Bamberg-Bergstadt, Bamberg-Inselstadt and Bamberg-Gärtnerstadt areas). You are welcome to take part in these field trips during your studies. Unfortunately, it is not possible to receive credit for these as part of the distribution elective component since they are day trips and therefore not complete modules.

The Professorship for Historical Geography usually offers a fieldwork practical course in the summer semester that can be completed as part of Module 6: Applied Historical Geography. The fieldwork course is typically organised by Honorary Professor Dr. Haik Thomas Porada, who also conducts research at the Leibniz-Institut für Länderkunde in Leipzig. Fieldwork exercises last five days on average and are linked to intensive fieldwork. In the summer semester 2022, a fieldwork course was held together with students from the University of Greifswald. In Nordmagazin, the evening news programme for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from the NDR news agency, there was a report broadcast on this course that gives you a good insight into the procedure for practical fieldwork.

In the course of your master’s studies in Historical Geography, you will mostly have contact with people who are part of the Professorship for Historical Geography. The holder of this professorship is Prof. Dr. Andreas Dix, who is also the programme director, Chair of the Examining Board and subject advisor for the master’s degree programme in Historical Geography. Johanna Grasser in the secretary’s office of the professorship is also an important contact person. Student and graduate assistants, as well as various members of teaching staff, complete the team.

There you can also find the Chair for Geography I (Cultural Geography), the Chair for Geography II (Physical Geography), the Professorship for Geographical Migration and Transition Studies and the Organizational Unit for the Didactics of Geography.

The study and subject examination regulations define, amongst other things, the ECTS points to be attained in the module groups. These regulations also stipulate which courses can be attended within the individual module groups. Detailed descriptions of each module referenced there can be found in the current version of the relevant module guide for the master’s degree programme. You can find the current study and subject examination regulations under Regulations and documents.
