A Midsummer Night's Dream (Summer 2024)

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the BUEDG, the group performed Shakespeare’s classic comedy „A Midsummer Night’s Dream“.

The play introduces the audience to a fictionalised version of Ancient Greece: a fairy kingdom full of love and magic. Set around the night before the wedding of the Greek Duke Theseus and his wife Hippolyta, four Athenian lovers get lost in the woods, where fantastic creatures are up to mischief. While the lovers romantic feelings are turned upside down, a group of amateur actors rehearses an absurd play in the woods. Due to a domestic conflict with the fairy queen, the king decides to trick his wife into falling in love with a donkey who is actually one of the actors. In the end everything comes together at the big wedding ceremony.

“Are you sure that we are awake? It seems to me that yet we sleep, we dream” (Demetrius)

The characters ask themselves whether the whole thing was a real or not and the play never gives a direct answer to that question, leading the audience to decide for themselves.

“Lord, what fools these mortals be!” (Puck)
