Taster lecture in economics on “Public goods and the climate transition: an experiment” fills the Audimax

The economics taster lecture on November 27, 2024 was a complete success! 258 students from 11 classes from 5 Bamberg secondary schools attended together with their teachers the lecture “Public goods and the climate transition: an experiment” by Prof. Marco Sahm from the Chair of Economics, in paticular Economic Theory.

The lecture was held as part of the course “Microeconomics II” and therefore brought the students together with economics students from the European Economic Studies and Computational Economics and Politics degree programs. Together, they took part in an experiment that simulates the problem of market failure in public goods and thus highlights a key issue in the climate transition.

Short description: Public goods are characterized by the fact that there is no rivalry regarding their consumption. In the lecture, we conduct an experiment which shows that the provision of public goods is generally under-invested. In practice, this problem is found, for example, in the investments that would be necessary to achieve climate protection targets. We investigate the causes of this problem and discuss various possible solutions.
