Heritage and Emotion
In connection with the focus area "Value Discourses" within the Heritage Sciences division at the Center for Heritage Conservation Studies and Technologies, the research field "Heritage and Emotion" deals with the emotional and subjective evaluation and valorization of cultural heritage. The research is based on an understanding of heritage studies as social and societal negotiation processes. The aim is to approach the concept of heritage from a new perspective by understanding it as a process that is also constituted through emotions.
The research field thus deliberately goes beyond an approach purely focused on objects and explicitly includes interdisciplinary and international approaches in its considerations. Approaches from the social and cultural studies, critical heritage studies and postcolonial theory are treated as well as discourses on history and heritage studies.
Considering recent research on the emotional turn, the project is highly topical, but at the same time ties in with fundamental considerations of heritage sciences, especially from the field’s founding period. During this period, emotional aspects in relation to the observation and evaluation of monuments played a decisive role, whether in Dehio's ideas of "piety" towards the monument or in the "age value" proclaimed by Riegl. As heritage studies increasingly focused on methods from the natural sciences and against the backdrop of a positivist understanding of science, emotional approaches to architectural heritage lost importance. At the same time, emotional aspects retained their relevance in the practical examination of heritage. The fact that emotions are closely linked to the 'inheritance' of architectural artefacts is demonstrated in debates on topics such as identity, home or beauty. The poster campaign Beautiful. But a piece of home is missing by the German Foundation for Monument Protection illustrates this, as do the discussions on the demolition of the Palace of the Republic and the new construction of the Berlin City Palace.
