Successful realization of smart product-service systems

Problem definition

Digitalization and servitization are key global megatrends that companies in the manufacturing industry in particular have to deal with intensively today. With the help of digital technologies such as the Internet of Things and data analytics, traditional products are being transformed into smart product-service systems. Previous scientific work has examined changes in companies that go hand in hand with the realization of smart product-service systems. In this context, dynamic and strategic capabilities have been identified that are important for the implementation of such systems. However, it is unclear how these capabilities need to be combined in order to ensure successful implementation.

Objective

This research gap is to be addressed in this project. The aim of the project is therefore to examine which configurations of transformational capabilities lead to the successful implementation of smart product-service systems in manufacturing companies in practice.

Theoretical background and methodology

The theory of socio-technical systems is used as a theoretical basis. The methodological approach consists of the configuration-theoretical approach of fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA).

Results

The project provides results on the scientific basis of socio-technical systems theory and its applicability in the context of smart product-service systems. In addition, concrete recommendations for action for companies in the transformation process were developed in the form of configurations of favorable transformational capabilities. As part of the project, various publications were generated and presented at scientific conferences. The contributions will be translated into articles for high-ranking journals.
