Professor Dr. Thomas Saalfeld is particularly interested in supervising doctoral students in the areas of legislative organization, parliamentary voting behaviour, the political representation of immigrants and ethnic minorities in Europe, the political economy of cabinet durability in European democracies, decision-making within political parties and the use of principal-agent models in the study of political institutions.

His research focuses on legislative organization and behaviour, coalition government and political representation in European democracies. Amongst other outlets, his research was published in academic journals such as the European Journal of Political Research, International Studies Quarterly, the Journal of Legislative Studies, the Rivista Italiana di Scienza Politica, Parliamentary Affairs and West European Politics.
