// DISSERTATION PROJECT
Language Proficiency of Immigrant Youth in the German Educational System
The cumulative dissertation project investigates the causes of immigrant students' acquisition of German language proficiency. I address two overarching research questions: First, I examine how opportunities for minority language use outside the family (e.g., with classmates) relate to immigrant students' proficiency in the language of instruction. Second, I analyze the validity of students' self-reported language proficiency - a measure which is commonly used in integration research to indicate the respondents' actual language proficiency.
