Welcome to Arabic Studies
مرحبا بكم في قسم اللغة العربية وآدابها
The Arabic Studies subject field deals with Arabic language, literature and culture in the oral and written transmission from pre-Islamic times to the present.
Based on profound language training, the main focus of Arabic Studies at the University of Bamberg is placed on literary studies. The entire spectrum of traditional Arabic literature is taken in consideration, as well as contemporary literary forms. Special attention is given to the analysis of various genres like poetry, prose, historical texts and academic encyclopaedias, as well as to new expressive media.
Besides literary studies, Arabic Studies in Bamberg focus also on the field of teaching Arabic as a foreign language (TAFL). The theoretical and practical framework for TAFL is provided both by the Arabic Studies professorship and by the Fachverband Arabisch e.V. which was founded in Bamberg. Successful projects in the field are the establishment of an elective Arabic course in secondary education and DAAD-financed workshops in collaboration with the University of Oran in Algeria and the University of Mohammed V. Rabat in Morocco.
Arabic Studies at the University of Bamberg is closely linked with its neighbouring disciplines in Middle Eastern Studies. At the bachelor’s level, you can study relevant units within the Islamic Orient bachelor's programme. Further specialization in the field of Arabic Studies with a focus on comparative and theoretical issues is possible in the accredited Arabistik/Arabic Studies master's programme.
