South Asian Quranic Exegesis and Its Influence on Quranic Interpretation in the Indonesian Archipelago

Tafsir (Exegesis), as an effort to understand and explain the meanings of the Qur'an, has a long and diverse tradition across different regions. One of the significant traditions of tafsir is the one that developed in South Asia, with prominent figures such as Shah Waliullah al-Dihlawi, Syed Ahmad Khan, Abu al-'Ala Maududi, and others, who have made substantial contributions to Islamic thought in the region. However, despite the considerable influence of South Asian exegesis on various aspects of Islamic thought, its impact on Quranic interpretation in Indonesia, has not been sufficiently explored. This study aims to address these questions by analyzing the influence of South Asian exegesis on the development of Quranic interpretation in Indonesia, by examining significant South Asian exegesis works that have been received and adopted in Indonesia, this research seeks to provide an understanding of the cross-cultural contribution of South Asian exegesis to the evolving tradition of Quranic interpretation in Indonesia. At least three reasons can make a different position than research others, First. investigating South Asian Quranic Exegesis as an intellectual history infrequently explored in many previous research, studies of South Asia more related to politics in the past and modern age not found more with exegesis as particular. Second, South Asia has many exegesis references with many influences, but it still needs exploring and attempting Quranic Exegesis legacy to investigate how its relations created interpretation in Islamic society. Third. The Indonesian context in this Quranic interpretation made the research particularly focused on investigating the intellectual history of “tafsir” between two regions, South Asia and Indonesia which has a long history in the interpretation of the text.
