Keep Calm and Have a Bonfire Night

“Remember, remember, the 5th of November…”

Or in our case, the 21st of November!

Why, you might ask, should we have a bonfire at this dark and cold time of the year?

Every year on 5 November, the British people remember the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, a plan to blow up the House of Lords and King James I together with them in order to promote his Catholic daughter Elizabeth to the throne. As you might have guessed, the plot was discovered in time and although many of the traitors fled London, eight of these men were executed. Among these was the guy who had to guard the barrels of gunpowder, called Guy Fawkes. Although this chap wasn’t even the leader of the plot, he is now the namesake of this memorial Bonfire Night.

Bonfire night's sectarian significance has generally been lost: it is now usually just a night of revelry with a bonfire and fireworks, although an effigy of Guy Fawkes is still burned on the fire.
